Millennials these days are popularising the lemon in black coffee fad which, according to viral claims, can help burn belly fat faster than normal. Although coffee and lemon are independently found in every kitchen; and intake of black coffee and lemon juice individually is strongly linked to better weight loss results. These two liquids are also associated to a stronger immune system, better metabolism, satiety and improved functioning of the nervous system. As a result, one ends up associating the two for better weight loss results. But, how true is it?
To know more about the scientific relevance of lemon in black coffee for weight loss, Times Now Digital connected with dieticians from Fortis Hospital and PD Hinduja Hospital.
Shalini Arvind, Chief Dietician at Fortis Hospitals spoke about the safe daily limit of coffee that one needs and how excess can backfire on health. She also opened up on how too much lemon juice can harm people with acidity; and concluded with the effect of following crash diets for weight loss.
"Lemon juice in coffee is merely another fad that has no scientific validity. People gain weight or fat mass over time and often wish to lose it in a matter of months by following trends that are neither useful nor recommended by dieticians. As a result, people frequently increase their coffee consumption, disregarding the safe daily limit of 300 mg of caffeine. Coffee is diuretic and excess consumption of it can cause dehydration, dizziness, headaches and excess consumption of caffeine causes problem of absorption of calcium and iron in the body," she explained
"When people with acidity issues consume too much lemon juice, they end up aggravating acidity. Ingesting lemon is beneficial if consumed in the recommended amount because it is high in vitamin C and aids in the absorption of iron, but when combined with caffeine, it has no additional benefits. For healthy weight loss, I recommend maintaining a healthy calorie deficit and regular exercise combined with proper dietician counseling. Crash diets and trends only lead to malnutrition and unhealthy fat loss, with many gaining back twice as much as they lost once they stop eating them" Dt Arvind concluded.
Ms. Rutu Dhodapkar from the Dietitics Department of P. D. Hinduja Hospital & Medical Research Centre, however, shared a different opinion. She advocated the virtues of portion control and striking the perfect balance between coffee and lemon juice.
"It is true that both lemon and coffee are healthy, and adding lemon to the coffee may reduce appetite and speed up metabolism, but burning fat seems a little difficult without exercise. Our body undergoes several changes when we lose weight efficiently. You sleep peacefully at night, the likelihood of getting other diseases decreases, your mood improves and you feel fitter. Lemon coffee is also believed to provide relief from headaches and also boost digestion; when consumed correctly and in right portions. We recommend the coffee with lemon concoction by mixing one cup (240 ml) of coffee with the juice of one lemon. Along with this, you need to follow your diet and exercise routine to lose weight healthily," she explained.
